Another Road Test Awaits: Providence Seeks a Breakthrough at Xavier After UConn Heartbreak

Just three days after pushing No. 4 UConn to the brink in an overtime thriller, the Providence College men’s basketball team hits the road for another critical BIG EAST test. The Friars will travel to Cincinnati to face Xavier on Saturday, Jan. 10, with tip-off set for 4:00 p.m. at the Cintas Center. The game will air nationally on FS1.

Providence enters the matchup searching for momentum in league play, but not confidence. Despite a 1-3 BIG EAST record, all three conference losses have come by five points or fewer, with two ending in overtime. The narrow margins tell the story of a team that has been competitive every night and is still learning how to close games in a rugged conference.

Wednesday’s 103-98 overtime loss to UConn may have been a defeat in the standings, but it offered further evidence of the Friars’ offensive firepower and growing depth. Sophomore Ryan Mela erupted for a career-high 19 points, while freshman Jamier Jones tied his career best with 18. Providence placed six players in double figures and shot nearly 60 percent from three-point range, trading blows with one of the nation’s elite programs for 45 minutes.

That offensive identity has defined the Friars through the season’s first 15 games. Providence leads the BIG EAST in scoring at 89.5 points per game, free-throw percentage (78.4 percent), and defensive rebounds per game (28.2). The Friars have been particularly efficient at the line, where Jaylin Sellers ranks first in the conference in free-throw percentage, converting 50 of 55 attempts (90.9 percent).

At the center of the attack is Jason Edwards, one of the most consistent scorers in the BIG EAST. Edwards leads the league at 17.3 points per game and has already scored 20 or more points in six contests this season, tied for the most by any player in the conference. He has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice and enters Saturday just 29 points shy of reaching 1,500 for his career. Sellers isn’t far behind, needing 96 points to reach the same milestone.

Providence’s balance extends beyond its veterans. Jones, who was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Jan. 5 after recording 15 points and 10 rebounds in a road win at St. John’s, has been remarkably efficient. The freshman is shooting 68.5 percent from the field and continues to make an impact in transition and around the rim. Stefan Vaaks, another first-year contributor, earned Freshman of the Week honors earlier this season and has provided spacing and versatility on the wing.

Defensively, the Friars are anchored by Oswin Erhunmwunse, who leads the BIG EAST with 43 blocks through 14 games. His presence at the rim will be crucial against a Xavier team that thrives on attacking the paint and creating second-chance opportunities.

Saturday’s matchup also carries historical weight. Providence holds a 12-16 all-time record against Xavier, but success in Cincinnati has been hard to come by. The Friars are just 3-11 all-time at Xavier and were swept by the Musketeers last season, including a 76-68 loss at the Cintas Center on March 8, 2025. Since Xavier joined the BIG EAST, Providence is 11-13 in the series.

With 10 newcomers on the roster and only five returnees, Providence is still building chemistry under head coach Kim English. The Friars were picked fourth in the preseason BIG EAST Coaches Poll, expectations fueled by talent and depth that has flashed throughout the nonconference and early league schedule.

Saturday represents another opportunity to turn close calls into results. A road win at Xavier would not only snap a recent skid against the Musketeers but also serve as a statement that Providence is ready to translate promise into progress as BIG EAST play intensifies.

Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. on FS1, as the Friars look to carry their offensive rhythm and hard-earned lessons into one of the league’s toughest road environments.
