Game Preview: Friars Welcome Brown Bears for 126th Meeting Tuesday Night on truTV
The Providence Journal

Fresh off one of their most complete outings of the season, the Providence College Friars will return to the Amica Mutual Pavilion on Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against the Brown Bears on truTV. The long-running city rivalry adds another chapter as the teams meet for the 126th time, with Providence holding a commanding 97–28 advantage in the all-time series and a 54–13 mark at home.

The Friars have controlled the matchup in recent years, winning 10 of the last 12 meetings. Their most recent clash came on December 10, 2023, when Providence earned a decisive 74–54 victory at the AMP. This year’s contest arrives at a moment when the Friars are beginning to round into form, buoyed by significant contributions from both veterans and newcomers.

A Challenging Schedule Paying Dividends

Providence hasn’t shied away from top-tier competition. Five of the team’s 10 games to date have come against power-conference opponents—an early-season trial that has accelerated this roster’s development. With 10 newcomers blending alongside five returnees, the Friars have leaned on their depth, shooting, and rapidly improving chemistry to build momentum.

That growth was on full display last week as Providence caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting 29 three-pointers across two games. The Friars’ 29-for-56 (.517) performance from deep reflects a team trending upward offensively. Entering Tuesday, Providence leads the BIG EAST in scoring at 90.4 points per game and tops the conference in free-throw percentage at 78.4 percent (171–218).

Key Contributors Emerging

Few guards in the conference and perhaps the country are playing with as much confidence as graduate transfer Jason Edwards. Named twice this season to the BIG EAST Honor Roll, Edwards has scored 20 or more points in five of 10 outings and enters Tuesday second in the BIG EAST in scoring at 18.6 points per game. His selection to the Naismith Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Top 20 Watch List underscores the national attention he’s earned early in the campaign.

Edwards is far from the Friars’ only weapon. Freshman guard Stefan Vaaks, named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on November 10, continues to impress with his composure and playmaking. He posted a 10-point, 10-assist double-double in the win over Fairleigh Dickinson on December 2 and added 18 points in Saturday’s victory over Rhode Island.

Another freshman, Jamier Jones, delivered a breakthrough performance in the rivalry win over URI. Jones finished with a career-high 18 points, 14 of them in the second half and went a perfect 7-for-7 from the field. His athleticism and finishing ability provide a dynamic spark off the bench.

Meanwhile, junior wing Jaylin Sellers is emerging as one of the Friars’ most versatile two-way contributors. Sellers, who averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds last week, earned BIG EAST Honor Roll recognition and enters Tuesday shooting 90 percent from the free-throw line (27–30), ranking second in the league. He also recorded his first double-double of the season on Saturday with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

In the paint, sophomore center Oswin Erhunmwunse continues to anchor Providence’s defensive identity. Erhunmwunse tallied 12 blocks across two games last week, six against FDU and six more in Saturday’s URI win. With 36 blocks in 10 games, he leads the nation at 3.6 blocks per contest, showcasing elite rim-protection instincts.

The Friars also received a key reinforcement Saturday when forward Duncan Powell returned to action after missing six games with a head injury. His presence adds size, rebounding, and versatility to the frontcourt rotation.

Providence’s Dominance Against Ivy League Opponents

History favors Providence when Ivy League opponents come to town. The Friars are 135–50 all-time against Ivy League programs, including their strong record against Brown. Given the improvement in Providence’s offensive rhythm and their strong defensive showing against URI, the Friars will look to continue asserting their home-court advantage. They enter the contest with a 647–249 (.722) all-time mark at the Amica Mutual Pavilion.

What’s at Stake Tuesday

For Providence, Tuesday’s matchup is an opportunity to extend their winning streak, continue sharpening their rotations, and reinforce their identity as a deep, fast-paced, high-scoring squad. With the BIG EAST schedule looming, every game becomes an important building block.

For Brown, the challenge is clear: slow down one of the nation’s hottest offenses and find a way to contain a Friar team that’s playing with confidence, balance, and growing chemistry.

As the rivalry renews once more, the Friars aim to maintain their dominance while the Bears look for an upset in one of college basketball’s most historic in-state series.
